This is all a very elaborate skin on a bunch of very detailed coding; the law of Inverse User Friendliness is very much in play here. It's easier on a day-to-day basis to arrange castle furniture then to rewrite lines of code, the way it's easier to just paste in a blog entry in a set page then to write an entire webpage worth of HTML.
Why a castle? Why a dragon-watched castle in the middle of a wasteland? Because this is supposed to be a protected network portal. Whoops.
